Fire Fighter Station Wear

Firefighter Stationwear is the first component of firefighting equipment – it is the fire department’s standard uniform that a firefighter will wear around the fire station. The purpose of the firefighter’s stationwear is to provide clothing that is comfortable for wear at the fire station, but will not obstruct the firefighter when donning turnout gear. Firefighter turnout gear or bunker gear is always to be worn over the stationwear garments during any call for service. The flame resistance of the station wear shirts and pants provide an extra layer of protection against fires.

The United States follows NFPA 1975, Standard on Station/Work Uniforms for Fire Fighters. NFPA 1975 ensures that no part of the firefighter’s uniform garment will "ignite, melt, drip, or separate" when exposed to a heat of 500°F for 5 minutes. The fireman's stationwear uniform usually consists of shirts, pants, and station safety shoes, commonly referred to as firefighter work boots, which are generally required to be fitted with safety toes and puncture-resistant soles and often zip closed.

Firefighter stationwear usually consists mainly of Nomex uniform pants and a Nomex uniform shirt, although stationwear is sometimes made of other flame resistant or even non-flame resistant materials. The color of the station uniform is usually navy blue, but it may differ from fire department to department. For example, captains often might wear white shirts with brass collar insignia, while firefighters generally wear navy blue shirts.
